Lev’s house in Notting Hill

The Peripheral

Lev’s house in Notting Hill is both a place of recovery and a working base for the people connected to the stub. At the house, Ash brings the unwell Wilf Netherton inside and uses a Medici to help him; later, Netherton sleeps and wakes among the house’s concealed spaces and stored peripherals. The domestic setting then shifts into a scene of operational uncertainty, as Lev discusses help for the stub and receives news that Flynne’s phone signatures have vanished near her home.

Arrival and Care

When Lowbeer’s car door slides open on the Notting Hill pavement, Ash reaches in, takes Netherton by the wrist, and presses her Medici against him with her other hand. She draws him from the car; his feet find the pavement with difficulty. Lowbeer gives practical instructions for bed rest and moderate sedation before the car door closes. Netherton’s leave-taking is markedly final, but Ash responds that he is not in a condition to make such a departure meaningful.

Ash leads him up the steps and through the entrance, past Wellies and outerwear. The ordinary signs of a household frame his impaired state, while the memory of Dominika makes him lower his voice. Once inside, he feels more secure in the elevator, though he remains unwell and only tentatively credits the Medici with helping. The house is therefore not simply a destination after treatment: it becomes the protected setting in which the treatment and his recovery continue.

A House of Hidden Access

In the silent garage, Ash straps Netherton into a cart and drives him to the Gobiwagen. She explains that one peripheral is in the back cabin and Lev’s brother’s is in the master. A touch to the wall releases a narrow staircase that had been concealed in the interior; it folds out of laser-cut veneer, supported by taut wires. Netherton climbs unsteadily to a glass-walled crow’s nest with gray leather upholstery. The house’s architecture supports privacy and access at once: a hidden route leads upward to a vantage point and sleeping space, while the peripherals remain housed in separate cabins.

Netherton’s later account of events makes the house’s rooms part of the treatment’s sequence. After stretching out upstairs, he falls asleep quickly, then wakes when Burton arrives. Ash tells him that the Medici has simulated the effects of substantially more REM sleep than he actually received and has done other work as well. After Netherton helps her get Ossian into a chair so that his shoulder can be repaired, Ash insists that Netherton return to sleep; he does so after another application of the Medici. Though he has seen the device perform a disturbing procedure on Ossian, he understands that its nanoscale operation remains sterile.

When he wakes again and descends the cheese-grater stairs, he is alone except for the peripherals in their respective cabins. Conner’s peripheral is lying on Lev’s grandfather’s baronial bed, arms spread and ankles together. The juxtaposition of an elaborate household interior, concealed stairs, and dormant artificial bodies gives the house a double function: it is a place where people rest, but also a repository for the remote bodies through which their wider work proceeds.

Lev’s Household and the Stub

The house is also a setting for Lev’s dealings with the stub. In the kitchen, he makes blini while Netherton says that Lowbeer is helping with the stub and has told him so. Rain falls in the garden on the hostas, and neither Gordon nor Tyenna is visible. Lev says that he does not expect Netherton to understand; the exchange establishes a difference in what the two men know, without explaining the assistance Lowbeer is providing.

Later, seated with Lev at the pine table, Netherton asks whether Lev knows who else is in his stub. Lev says he does not, but that their quants are at least as good as Ash’s. A message interrupts the meal: Lev asks when the information came in and whether the people involved know who, then asks to be informed. He puts down his fork and tells Netherton that the signatures of Flynne’s phone have vanished about two miles from her home. The kitchen conversation thus carries news from the stub into Lev’s house, turning a domestic meal into the point at which an unexplained disappearance becomes immediate.

Narrative Significance

The house gathers together the story’s contrasting modes of life: familiar domestic details such as outerwear, a kitchen, blini, and a pine table, and the technological infrastructure of Medici treatment, peripherals, and work on the stub. Its rooms accommodate recovery, but they do not remove Netherton or Lev from the pressures of events elsewhere. Netherton wakes into a house populated by stored remote bodies; Lev receives news of Flynne’s vanished phone signatures while sitting down to eat. The residence therefore functions as a private refuge that remains connected to distant danger and continuing investigation.
